Gema sitting by the sea after a surf session

Why this retreat

I started surfingat thirty.

I was living in London when I fell in love with surfing. But for years I could only get in the water for a few days at a time, usually on holiday. I loved it, but it was hard to make real progress when every session felt so far apart.

I started to feel like I was late to the party — and like everyone else knew what they were doing. Eventually I moved to Portugal to be closer to the ocean and surf consistently. I'm still learning, so I know how frustrating it can feel to start as an adult, and how good it feels when something finally clicks.

“I know what it feels like to love surfing but never have enough time in the water. I'm creating the retreat I wish I'd had during those years.”

Who it's for

For women who started surfing as adults and want to progress, build confidence and spend more consistent time in the ocean.

Come solo or with a friend and meet women who understand the nerves, the joy and the small wins of learning later in life. A small group, surf sessions organised by level and plenty of time in the water to find your rhythm.

The wave 🌊

Why Imsouane

Imsouane is known for its long, mellow waves, making it a great place for beginners and progressing surfers who want more time on each ride to practise, build confidence and improve.

But it's more than just the surf. It's a small, laid-back surf village where life revolves around the ocean, with sunsets, local cafés and the dunes of Timlaline just a short trip away.

A week here is about surfing more, slowing down and fully living the surf-town experience for a few days. 🌊

Good to know

Frequently asked questions.

Who is the retreat for?+

It’s a women-only week for beginner and progressing surfers who started surfing later in life and want more time in the water. You’ll share it with women who understand the nerves, the joy and the small wins of learning later in life.

What surf level do I need?+

Ideally, you’ll have surfed at least once before and already know that you enjoy it. This retreat is mainly focused on spending a lot of time in the water, improving your surfing and building confidence, so it’s best suited to women who already know they want surfing to be a big part of their week. You definitely don’t need to be an experienced surfer — beginners and progressing surfers are very welcome. But if you’ve never tried surfing before and aren’t sure whether you’ll enjoy it, this may not be the best retreat to discover that for the first time.

Do I need a wetsuit? What is the water temperature like?+

Yes — definitely wetsuit weather! The water in Imsouane stays fairly cool year-round. A wetsuit is essential for the surf sessions, especially if you tend to get cold easily. Surf equipment is included on coached surf days, so you won’t need to bring your own unless you prefer to.

What is the weather like in Imsouane in early March?+

Early March is right at the end of winter, so the days are generally mild and often sunny, with temperatures around 18–21°C during the day. Once the sun goes down it can feel much cooler, with nights around 12–13°C, so I’d definitely bring a jumper or light jacket for the evenings.

What are the surf conditions usually like at that time of year?+

Our dates are still within the main surf season. Exact conditions can never be guaranteed this far in advance, but late February and early March is typically still consistent, with more of a medium swell and generally smaller conditions than December and January. There also tends to be less wind as winter comes to an end, which can make for really nice surf conditions. Imsouane’s Bay is particularly well known for its long, mellow rides, giving beginner and progressing surfers more time on the wave to practise, build confidence and work on technique.

What’s included?+

Seven nights’ accommodation, breakfast every day, two dinners, five coached surf sessions, equipment on coached surf days, two video analysis sessions, Pilates and a Timlaline sandboarding excursion.

How are the surf groups organised?+

Surf groups will be organised by level, with a maximum of five surfers per coach. There will be groups for women who are still working mainly in the white water, as well as groups for surfers who are already paddling out to the line-up and catching green waves. Groups can also be adjusted during the week as the coaches get to know everyone better and depending on progress, confidence and the conditions on the day.

How much does it cost?+

Places start from €590 for the shared stay. Private room and sea-view ensuite options are also available.

How do I book?+

Send me your details through the form and I’ll personally send you the full brochure and booking link.

What happens if I need to cancel?+

I completely understand that plans can change. The 30% booking deposit is non-refundable, as I also have to make non-refundable commitments to the surf house. For cancellations before 1 December 2026, any payments made beyond the deposit will be refunded. From 1 December 2026, payments are officially non-refundable, as by that point I may already have committed the money to the surf house and other retreat costs. That said, if you do need to cancel, I will always do my best to recover as much of your payment as possible and return it to you. I would never keep money that I’m able to recover — the only amounts I wouldn’t be able to refund would be costs that the surf house or other retreat providers have already charged me and that I cannot recover myself. Because this can’t be guaranteed, I strongly recommend taking out travel insurance with cancellation cover. 🤍

Can I extend my stay before or after the retreat?+

You can extend your stay after the retreat, subject to availability at Shaka Ashore. Unfortunately, they can’t accommodate extra nights before the retreat starts. If your travel times don’t line up perfectly with check-in or check-out, no worries — you’ll be able to leave your luggage at the surf house before check-in or after check-out.

Is this retreat women-only?+

Yes 🤍 When I first started planning the retreat, I asked my community what kind of experience they were looking for, and the overwhelming preference was for a women-only group. So I decided to create this first retreat specifically for women — with a focus on feeling comfortable, supported and surrounded by other women who are also learning, progressing and sharing the same kind of surf journey.

How do airport transfers work?+

Transfers can be arranged from Agadir or Essaouira airport. They’re priced per car rather than per person, so closer to the retreat I’ll do my best to coordinate everyone’s arrival and departure times and, where possible, group people together so you can share the cost. Each car can take up to 6 people. However, shared transfers can’t be guaranteed, as it will depend on everyone’s flight times. If your arrival or departure doesn’t match with anyone else’s, you may need to arrange your own transfer — but I’ll still be happy to help you organise it and point you in the right direction.
